Iain Aitchison

Iain is a dual British-German citizen and registered architect in UK and Germany.

He is an internationally recognized delay expert, with more than 35 years of experience in the international construction industry, and expertise in complex buildings, power and process plants, and major infrastructure projects. He is regularly appointed as an independent expert on complex and high-value disputes and has given expert-written and oral evidence in international arbitration on forensic delay and FIDIC contract administration issues.

He is an accredited dispute board member, accredited mediator, and a practicing arbitrator. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a Fellow of the Dispute Board Federation, a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Arbitrators, and a Freeman of the City of London.

Iain’s work as an expert witness in arbitration was recognized with a Client Choice award in 2024.

His experience as an architect includes projects in the public sector, international private sector, and in multidisciplinary practice. Iain has been the project lead architect on industrial, research, and development projects in Germany, including industrial projects with exceptional technical demands, achieving firsts in planning, building, and environment permissions for multinational clients in automotive, chemical, and space infrastructure.

His dispute resolution experience includes case management of disputes referred to the Dispute Board under FIDIC contracts in South Africa, achieving a track record of settlement.

As an expert, Iain has been instructed by insurers in the UK on technical issues related to construction projects, and as a delay expert on construction projects and in support of delay analysis related to major IT-related disputes. He has sat in UK disputes as a sole arbitrator.
